Dental Crown Came Loose? What to Do Before Your Appointment

First, identify what has happened

If a dental crown came loose, stop chewing on that side. Do not test it with your tongue or fingers. I am Dr. Horia Theodore Ionescu. I look at the tooth underneath before I decide anything. A crown that rocks, shifts when you bite, changes how your teeth meet, or causes new sensitivity has lost some hold. Repeated movement can dislodge it completely.

I first want to know whether the crown is still on the tooth, came off in one piece, or broke. Here is what to do:

  • If it is still attached: Leave it alone. Avoid chewing on that side. Call a dental office promptly. Do not pull it off, even if it feels barely attached.
  • If it has come off intact: Pick it up. Rinse it gently with water. Put it in a clean container. Do not scrub it or scrape off old cement. I need to check the fit and the condition of the crown.
  • If it is cracked or broken: Do not try to glue it back. Save the pieces you can find. Keep hot and cold food away from the exposed tooth.

A loose dental crown will not tighten by itself. Even without pain, arrange dental care as soon as possible. The exposed tooth is more vulnerable to damage and sensitivity.

Protect the exposed tooth while you wait

Keep the area clean with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush around the exposed tooth and the crown. Do not press or pull on a crown that is still attached.

Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Avoid hard, sticky, chewy, very hot, or very cold foods. They can catch the crown or trigger sensitivity.

Floss carefully beside the affected tooth. Slide the floss out sideways rather than pulling up. Pulling up can lift the crown further.

  • Use room-temperature food and drinks if heat or cold hurts.
  • If you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever safely, read the label and follow the directions.
  • Do not place aspirin directly on the gum. Do not use household glue on a crown.

Household glue is not safe for the mouth. Aspirin can burn gum tissue. If a sharp edge rubs your cheek or tongue, ask a dentist or pharmacist about safe temporary wax.

At Dentistry by Design, Dr. Horia Theodore Ionescu keeps same-week openings for loose and broken crowns. The office is at 9381 E Stockton Blvd, Suite #100, Elk Grove, CA 95624. We are open Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm. Closed weekends. Appointments usually run 60 minutes or longer. We see fewer patients each day. A crown gets a full appointment, not a squeeze-in between hygiene visits. Call (916) 685-4662. Erin handles scheduling, treatment planning, and financial coordination. Alyssa manages the office. Leticia has more than 20 years of clinical experience as an RDA. Sarah has been an RDA since 2006. Both are Expanded Functions II. The practice has a 4.9-star rating across more than 600 patient reviews. We offer a dental savings membership club for patients without insurance and CareCredit financing. Tell Erin what the tooth is doing. She can tell you if it needs same-day attention or can wait until the next opening.

Use temporary cement only in limited situations

Temporary dental cement is a short-term option. It works only when the crown is intact and seats fully in its original position. Follow the directions. Call for an appointment anyway.

Do not force a crown into place. If it will not seat easily, feels high when you bite, or causes pain, stop. The tooth may have shifted or the crown may be out of line. Forcing it makes the problem harder to see.

Temporary cement is not for a cracked crown, a partially attached crown, or an implant-supported crown. In each case, call before you try anything.

A temporary crown can come off. Protect the prepared tooth. Call the dentist who placed it. The exposed tooth may be sensitive, and that office can advise you.

When a crown will not stay put, stop removing it and reseating it. I need to check why it moved. Decay, a crack, or another change may be underneath.

Know when to call a dentist urgently

Call a dentist for any loose or missing crown, even when there is no pain. A crown will not tighten itself. The uncovered tooth can become irritated or damaged.

Call for urgent dental assessment if pain gets worse, or if you have swelling, pus, a bad taste, fever, or a sudden change in your bite. Those signs can mean infection or structural damage.

If you think you inhaled the crown, or you are choking, cannot breathe, or keep coughing, get emergency medical help. Suspected inhalation needs prompt evaluation even if breathing seems normal.

If you may have swallowed the crown, call a dentist or medical professional. Go to emergency care for choking, trouble breathing or swallowing, or severe pain.

There is no safe waiting period for a loose crown. The risk depends on the tooth and the crown’s condition. Do not wait for pain.

Understand why crowns loosen and how they are assessed

A crown can loosen when the cement weakens. Decay near the crown margin, a crack, or changes in the tooth underneath can reduce support. Grinding or clenching loads the crown again and again.

During an exam, I check the crown’s edges, the tooth underneath, the nearby gums, and how the teeth meet. I may take an X-ray. Decay and some cracks are not visible by eye.

If the tooth is sound and the crown fits well, I can recement it. If there is decay, a fracture, or a poor fit, the tooth may need repair or the crown may need replacement. The exam decides that.

An implant-supported crown is different. The movement may be in the crown or in the connection to the implant. If the implant itself moves, that needs immediate assessment. Do not try to tighten it at home.

Reduce the chance of another loose crown

Brush twice a day. Clean between your teeth. Keep routine exams. These habits limit decay near crown edges and catch fit changes early.

Do not chew ice or other very hard things. They crack restorations. If you grind or clench, ask whether a night guard makes sense.

After any loose crown, get an exam. Temporary cement is not a final fix. I need to know why the crown moved before we decide what comes next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a crown come loose on a root-canal-treated tooth?

Yes. A root canal does not change how the crown is cemented. The cement can still weaken and the crown can still come loose.

How much does it cost to fix a loose dental crown?

The cost depends on what I find. If the tooth and crown are intact, recementing is straightforward. If decay or a crack is present, treatment changes. I give a fee estimate after I examine the tooth and crown.

Can I sleep with my crown out?

No. Take the crown out before you sleep. Store it in a clean container. You could swallow it or damage it overnight.

Is it common for a crown to come loose?

A crown can come loose when the cement fails or the tooth underneath changes. Decay, a crack, or grinding can all contribute. It is not rare.

If a dental crown came loose, a prompt exam protects the tooth. It tells us whether the crown needs recementing, repair, or replacement. Adults in Elk Grove and Sacramento County can book an exam with our restorative practice in Elk Grove to have the crown and underlying tooth assessed.
